Victoria Falls is a small and growing town situated in the northwest corner of Zimbabwe in the Zambezi Valley. The city is home to the world-famous Victoria Falls, on the Zimbabwe-Zambia border.
Victoria Falls is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Africa, and for good reason. The massive waterfall, which straddles the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
The city is situated within the wider Victoria Falls National Park and a short distance upstream lies the Zambezi National Park. Victoria Falls town is a special place where there is the privilege of co-existing with wildlife.
In recent years, there has been a surge of investment in new hotels and shopping malls in Victoria Falls. This is due to the increasing popularity of the destination, as well as the government's commitment to tourism development.
For tourists and visitors, the city offers a full range of accommodation options, from camping, bed and breakfast, and self-catering to luxury resort hotels and safari lodges. Victoria Falls boasts of some of the best hotels and safari lodges in the country if not the whole Southern African region.
In 2012, Victoria Falls had a population of 35,000 people and is estimated to have increased to over 100,000 currently. Victoria was accorded a city status in 2020 and there are plans to further develop it through the Victoria Falls Area Tourism Development Plan and the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) corridor which comprises Masuwe Stateland, Batoka City, Mlibizi, Binga Centre, Sijalila, Hwange Hinterland and Gwayi Shangani resort.
Demand for housing and the growth of the city is expected to expand. Demand for commercial land is always high in the city given its scarcity and the rising opportunities due to the growing popularity of Victoria Falls as an international tourist destination.
Elephant Walk, Sawanga Shopping Mall, Victoria Falls Shopping Centre, and Phumula Centre are some of the major shopping centers located in the city. Victoria Falls also boasts of a state-of-the-art International Airport. The city is also being promoted as an International Financial Hub with the Victoria Falls Stock Exchange established and located within its boundaries.
The status of Victoria Falls as an investment hub is further cemented by the level of development activity recently witnessed in the area. Next in line of development is a new 4-star hotel. In partnership with Cresta Hotels, Zesa Electricity Industry Pension Fund is at an advanced stage to develop, probably the best 4-star hotel in Victoria Falls.
The Hotel will have 180 rooms, conference facilities, and other entertainment activities and operated by Cresta Hotels on a lease basis.
Here are some of the recent hotels that have been built in Victoria Falls:
The Zambezi Sun Hotel: This 4-star hotel opened in 2021 and is located on the banks of the Zambezi River. It has 150 rooms and suites, as well as a spa, swimming pool, and several restaurants.
The Victoria Falls Waterfront: This development is still under construction, but it is expected to be completed in 2023. It will include a shopping mall, hotel, casino, and residential units.
The Palm River Hotel: situated along the banks of the iconic Zambezi River, among towering indigenous trees and only 4 kilometers from Africa’s Natural World Wonder, Victoria Falls.
These new hotels are a sign of the growing popularity of Victoria Falls as a tourist destination. The investment in new infrastructure is also a boost to the local economy and is expected to create jobs and opportunities for the people of Zimbabwe.
